How a school's roster moves from Regionals → State → Nationals, who counts toward team scoring at each stage, and who stays eligible for individual event awards.

Understanding Full vs Partial Teams

Every rule below depends on two labels: whether a roster is a Full Team or a Partial Team, and whether a student is competing as a Team decathlete or an Alternate.

Full Team

At least 2 Honors, 2 Scholastic, and 2 Varsity students.

H    S    V

Eligible for team awards at Regionals, State, and Nationals.

Partial Team

Doesn't meet the 2/2/2 minimum in every category.

H    S    V

Not eligible for team awards, at any level. Individual students remain fully eligible for event-specific awards.

How the team score actually works

Up to 3 Team decathletes may compete in each category, but only the top 2 scores in each category are added into the team score. The 3rd Team decathlete still counts for Full/Partial status and can win individual event awards - their score just isn't part of the team total. This holds at every stage. Alternates never count toward the team score.

Counts toward team score
Team, not scored
Alternates - never scored

This pattern repeats for Honors, Scholastic, and Varsity - up to 6 students per category (3 Team + 3 Alternates), 18 total across a full Regionals roster.

Stage 1

Regionals

A team's core roster is up to 3 Honors, 3 Scholastic, and 3 Varsity students. Separately, a school may field up to 3 Alternates in each category - 9 Alternates total. Alternates compete only at Regionals.

Team decathlete May count toward team score

Up to 3 Honors + 3 Scholastic + 3 Varsity

  • Number of decathletes per category determines the team's Full/Partial status.
  • Only the top 2 scores in each category enter the team score.
  • Eligible for team awards if the team is Full.

Alternate Event awards only

Up to 3 per category - 9 total at Regionals

  • A coach may field up to 3 Alternates per category.
  • Only available at Regionals - no Alternate entry point at State.
  • Eligible for event awards; never counts toward the team score.
NOTEA Partial Team can still field Alternates. Anyone who competes at Regionals, Team decathlete or Alternate, is advancement-eligible for State.
Stage 2

State

State has no Alternate lane - every student who competes at State is on a school's roster. Coaches can reshuffle who fills that roster, but the same rules carry over.

Who advances from Regionals: The top 50% of Full Teams (25 max.) will be invited to compete at State, as well as the top 50% of decathletes (45 max.) from non-advancing schools and/or Partial Teams.

Who's eligible for the State roster

  • Must have competed at Regionals as a Team decathlete or an Alternate. No one new can be added at State.
  • Coaches may swap a Regionals Alternate into a Team slot for State.

The cap and scoring rule still apply

H   S   V
  • No more than 3 in each category.
  • A swap is a straight substitution: one Alternate in, one Team decathlete out.
  • Only the top 2 scores per category count.
STILL TRUEFull vs. Partial status is re-evaluated on the State roster. A Partial Team at State cannot win team awards; its students remain eligible for individual event awards.
Stage 3

Nationals

Under the 2027 policy, Arizona is classified as a Large program and receives four guaranteed team allotments. Schools qualifying as teams and invited individuals remain separate eligibility categories.

Team pathway 4 Arizona allotments

  • The State champion receives the first guaranteed team slot.
  • The top 50% of Arizona's four allotments - two slots - are filled by placement alone.
  • Remaining guaranteed slots go to the highest-scoring eligible teams not already qualified; diversity may be considered when it does not substantially weaken the field.
  • USAD may also award up to six national team wildcards.

Individual pathway Non-qualifying schools

  • A decathlete must have an official Round 3 score, meet applicable eligibility rules, and attend a school that did not qualify as a team.
  • Selections should follow descending Round 3 overall score unless Arizona publishes a different state procedure.
  • A student at a Nationals-qualifying school cannot receive a separate individual invitation.
POLICYThe 2027 National framework is subject to final capacity and published advancement procedures. Team qualification and individual invitation are mutually exclusive pathways.
Examples

Three schools, three seasons

Team decathlete / Full team    Alternate    Partial team
Scenario A - Full team, alternate swapped in
Regionals · Full Team
H   S   V

3H/3S/3V team, plus a 4th Honors Alternate.

Team score is strong enough to advance.

State · Full Team

An Honors team member steps back; the coach swaps the Regionals Alternate into that slot.

Still 3H/3S/3V. Team places 1st.

Nationals · Team Pathway

The school qualifies through Arizona's team-allotment process.

Its competitors participate through the school's National team roster.

Explanation: The roster stayed Full throughout. The Regionals Alternate entered through a same-category, one-for-one swap and competed at State; the school later qualified through the team pathway.
Scenario B - Full team slips to Partial
Regionals · Full Team

3H/3S/2V team, plus 1 Honors Alternate.

State · Partial Team

A Varsity member can't attend. The spare Alternate is Honors, not Varsity - not an eligible swap.

Advances 3H/3S/1V. No team awards.

Nationals · Individual Invite

No school invitation - the roster was Partial at State.

One Scholastic student receives their own invitation.

Explanation: One missing Varsity student flipped Full → Partial. The team lost team-award eligibility, but the path moved to an individual invitation.
Scenario C - Partial team from the start
Regionals · Partial Team

Only 4 students: 1H/2S/1V. Fails 2/2/2 in Honors and Varsity.

No team awards; all 4 decathletes compete for individual event awards.

State · Partial Team

All 4 competed at Regionals, so all 4 are eligible to advance. Partial blocks team awards, not advancement. Only two decathletes score high enough to advance.

Nationals · Individual Invite

No school invitation was possible. One Scholastic student's State score earns them an individual invitation.

Explanation: Partial status doesn't end a season - it only takes team awards off the table. Students can still advance, medal individually, and reach Nationals on their own merit.
