Arizona Academic Decathlon Association Scholarships

The Arizona Academic Decathlon Association may grant cash prizes and post-secondary scholarships for top-scoring decathletes and members of winning teams.

Scholarships are not guaranteed. Each June, the Board of Directors will determine if and in what amounts scholarships will be awarded based on donations received throughout the fiscal year.

University Scholarships for Decathletes

The major Arizona universities have offered the following scholarships. For all of the scholarships listed below, except the ASU Two-Year Participation Scholarship, the Arizona Academic Decathlon Association notifies the universities of the winning decathletes each year and the universities contact the students to confirm the award. Award of these scholarships is dependent upon student eligibility and are subject to change at any time.

ASU Scholarships of $2,000 renewable for three years ($8,000 total if used for four years) are offered to the nine team members of the first place regional teams.

ASU awards $2,000 renewable scholarships for three years to Top Scoring Students of each region who were not members of the winning teams. These are the students who are awarded the ten-event medal.

ASU Two-Year Participation Scholarship is a one-time $500 cash award to any student who has been part of a competing team for two years. This award cannot be combined with any other ASU Academic Decathlon scholarships. Students must apply to receive this scholarship; application information is available here.

A University of Arizona tuition scholarship of up to $2000*, renewable for three years ($8000 for four years) is offered to the nine team members of the first place regional teams.

A University of Arizona tuition scholarship of up to $2000*, renewable for three years ($8000 for four years) is offered to the Top Scoring Students of each region who were not members of the winning teams. These are students who are awarded the ten-event medal.

* This tuition scholarship will be offered for up to $2000 and will be stacked with other University of Arizona tuition scholarships for the amount up to base tuition only.

NAU Scholarship awards $1,750 renewable for three years ($7,000 for four years) to the nine team members of the first place regional teams.

NAU Scholarship awards $1,750 renewable for three years ($7,000 for four years) to Top Scoring Students of each region. These are the students who are awarded the ten-event medal.

Arizona Academic Decathlon Association Awards

Luncheon with AADA Board_011Winners of all Regional and State competitions will be announced at an awards presentation. The date, time and location of that event will be announced by the appropriate Regional or State Coordinator.

In keeping with the idea that students compete on both an individual and group basis, awards for Academic Decathlon will be given for each Regional and State competition as follows:

  1. All participants will receive a certificate of recognition.
  2. A perpetual Decathlon trophy will be awarded to the team whose members acquire the highest number of points in all ten events. All team members will also receive special ten-event gold medals.
  3. A permanent trophy will go to the 2nd place team; all nine team members will also receive ten-event silver medals.
  4. A permanent trophy will go to the 3rd place team; all nine team members will also receive ten-event bronze medals.
  5. Medals for individuals will be awarded based on each student’s cumulative scores covering all ten events.
  6. The outstanding individual essay, speech, and interview will receive trophies/plaques at both the Regional and State competitions.
  7. Trophies will be awarded to Super Quiz teams for 1st through 3rd place at both the Regional and State competitions.
  8. Please note that duplicate medals will be awarded in case of tie scores in the individual events.
  9. At both the Regional and the State competition, the student with the highest overall score will receive an individual award.
